Scientists discover X-rays emitting from Uranus
Kaelan Deese 4/1/2021

The seventh planet from the sun emits X-rays, a scientific study revealed.

Astronomers examined two images of Uranus and discovered that it exhibits X-ray activity, according to a study published Wednesday in the Journal of Geophysical Research.

The images were taken by NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory in 2002 and 2017 and showed a clear detection of X-rays in the first image and a possible flare in the second.

The cause for the planet emitting X-ray light is most likely due to the sun, as scientists already know Jupiter and Saturn scatter X-rays given off by the sun.

It is not clear as to whether there is another cause for the X-ray light. There are "tantalizing hints" that at least one other source of the X-rays is present, coming from the planet itself, according to a NASA press release.

"If further observations confirm this, it could have intriguing implications for understanding Uranus," NASA said in a press release. "One possibility is that the rings of Uranus are producing X-rays themselves, which is the case for Saturn's rings."

Studying X-ray emissions can provide insight into a planet's characteristics, such as clues about the "atmospheric, surface and planetary ring composition," NASA said.

‘Triple Vision’ Image Of Jupiter Shows What’s Beneath Its Clouds

"Back in 2017, Hubble and Gemini North viewed Jupiter simultaneously. These multiwavelength views revealed the origin and properties of numerous phenomena. Dark infrared regions, including the Great Red Spot (and "Red Spot Jr."), possess thick clouds. However, tiny infrared “dots” indicate downdrafts, creating convection and enabling Jovian lightning storms. Visible cloud breaks in Jupiter's bands appear hot, allowing infrared emission through."
Almost every image of Jupiter, our largest planet, comes to us as the result of observations made in visible light. That's too bad, because by looking at Jupiter in multiple different wavelengths simultaneously, we can learn so much more than just from one, narrow band of viewing.

Well, on January 11, 2017, infrared, optical, and ultraviolet observations occurred simultaneously! Here's what we saw and learned.

Total lunar eclipse to coincide with supermoon next week
Carmina Blewett of RNZ
07:44, May the 20th, 2021.

Image

This total lunar eclipse in July 2018 was the longest blood moon visible this century.

Next week's blood moon, a total lunar eclipse, should be “spectacular”, says an astronomy expert.

Wednesday's eclipse will also coincide with what is known as a supermoon, when it is at its closest point to Earth.

University of Auckland senior lecturer of physics Dr Nicholas James Rattenbury said the blood moon was caused by planet alignment and dispersed light.

“When the eclipse is deep, we have the Sun, the Earth and the Moon almost pretty much lined up so the Earth's shadow is falling right across the Moon's surface.”

With the Moon orbiting closer to Earth, combined with the eclipse, it is expected to seem coloured and brighter.

“You can see the Moon appear to turn red, but the Moon isn't actually turning red,” Rattenbury said.

“What's happening is that the light from the sun is partly going through the Earth's atmosphere and the blue light gets scattered down to us – that's why the sky appears to be blue – and the red light which is left over keeps on going through the atmosphere and gets bent onto the surface of the Moon kind of like a lens.”

While he was aware of the total lunar eclipse being the sole one of 2021, stargazers should be open-minded as to how red the blood moon may appear.

“We shouldn't expect that the Moon looks like a very bright red. For some people it looks kind of reddish brown or a dull salmony colour, but it's certainly an effect you want to look out for,” he said.

University of Canterbury Mt John Observatory director Karen Pollard said providing clear conditions, a good show would be on.

“The altitude is quite high, 60 degrees up from the horizon ... it should be quite visible, just depending on what your current weather situation is like.”

Pollard said the event should be observable from anywhere the Moon could be seen, but recommended getting away from street lights for prime viewing.

“They're quite harsh white lights, so if you get away from those then you'll get a better view. If you have a small telescope or a pair of binoculars, you can have a closer look ... so you can see some of the detail.”

The total eclipse will start shortly after 11pm, followed by the maximum eclipse about 11.20pm.

This week there will be an annular eclipse of the Sun (aka a "Ring of Fire" eclipse). It'll be visible in the northeast United States and eastern Canada just after sunrise on Thursday, June 10th.

The path of totality will follow a rather strange path. It will start right at dawn, just north of the Great Lakes in Ontario. Then it will spiral to the northeast across northern Quebec and Greenland. It'll pass directly over the North Pole. Finally it will meet the sunset over eastern Russia.

Total elapsed time will be about two hours. The zone of totality will touch every time zone, yet will only be visible to a few million people (mostly in the area of Toronto)...

Largest comet ever discovered is spotted heading towards the sun
RNZ
14:32, July the 1st, 2021.

An illustration showing the distant Comet Bernardinelli-Bernstein as it might look in the outer solar system.

A comet believed to be the largest ever discovered has been exposed by a pair of US astronomers and is heading towards the sun.

Comet Berardinelli-Bernstein, named after its founding astronomers, is estimated to measure at least 100km long and 1000 times the mass of most comets.

That makes it arguably the largest comet discovered in modern times.

For comparison, the asteroid that slammed into Earth 66 million years ago and wiped out the dinosaurs was an estimated 10km across.

Astronomers Pedro Bernardinelli and Gary Bernstein from the University of Pennsylvania discovered the comet, which is a relic from the Oort Cloud – a bunch of leftovers kicked out of the solar system by Jupiter about 4 billion years ago or so.

“Once in a while one of them gets knocked towards us and when it gets close to us, starts to evaporate, grows a tail and we call it a comet,” Bernstein told Morning Report.

It has to have a tail – a cloud of gas and dust called a 'coma' – to be identified as a comet, otherwise it would be an asteroid.

The Dark Energy Survey first spotted the object in 2014, but images collected of it over four years did not show any tail.

Image

A comet passes over Stonehenge. A ‘tail’ of gas and dust called a coma is what identifies a comet, otherwise it would be an asteroid.

However, fresh images of the object showed it had grown a coma in the past three years, officially making it a comet.

The closest the comet is expected to get to the sun is about the distance of Saturn, which will be in 2031.

Last month, it was estimated to be at the distance of Uranus from the sun.

“But if you're from the Oort Cloud, that's very nearby. Getting that close is rare,” Bernstein said.

“We discovered this guy as it was coming to us about the distance of Neptune, but it spends most of its life a thousand times further away than that.

“The last time it came through our neighbourhood here was more than 3 million years ago.”

Because Oort Cloud objects tend to spend time far away from Earth, Bernstein said researchers were usually unable to learn much about the Oort Cloud.

“But they're quite interesting because, as I say, they were relics from the early days of the solar system and this is kind of our chance to get some more information about what those things are made of, [and] as it evaporates we can try to tell what kind of molecules and things are in it.

Image
OPENSPACE/AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY/AP
If the comet came within two or three times Earth's distance to the sun, then it would potentially be one of the most spectacular naked-eye comets ever seen.

“Maybe we'll learn something about comets that the closer-in ones, the smaller ones, aren't telling us.”

However, despite its size, the comet would not be visible to the naked eye.

“Even though it's very big, it's also further away than most comets ... but in telescopes it will be visible for decades.

“If instead of 10 times Earth's distance to the sun, if it came within two or three times Earth's distance to the sun, then it would potentially be one of the most spectacular naked-eye comets ever seen, but unfortunately that won't happen.”

How and when to spot Matariki and Puanga on Friday morning,
the start of Māori New Year

Brittney Deguara
14:12, July the 1st, 2021.

Matariki star cluster as seen from our point of view from the Southern Hemisphere.

Before the sun rises on Friday morning the Matariki cluster will appear, marking the official start to the Māori New Year.

The cluster of stars and Puanga, the brightest star in the Orion constellation, will be visible above the horizon to the northeast at around 5.45am, Māori astronomer Dr Rangi Matamua of Ngāi Tūhoe said.

By around 6.20am, it will be “quite high in the sky.”

“If you’re on the eastern coast you’re probably going to see it a bit earlier than you would on the west [coast],” Matamua explained.

The cluster and Puanga – another star that marks the beginning of the new year – would both be visible to the naked eye.

Matamua suggested when looking east and after spotting Orion’s Belt/Tautoru, cast your eyes to the left. You’ll gaze past Hyades/Te Kokotā and then find the Matariki cluster.

”Just a little bit further to the left [of Te Kokotā] you will see a small cluster of stars twinkling.”

Puanga would be visible above Orion’s Belt as the first bright star near it.

Image
CHRISTEL YARDLEY/STUFF
Dr Rangi Matamua would be leading the Matariki celebrations at Te Papa in Wellington on Friday morning.

Matamua spotted the cluster on Thursday morning, but the correct lunar phase placed the start of the New Year on Friday. He would be leading the festivities at Te Papa in Wellington on Friday to mark the occasion, and hosting a Q&A session at the museum later in the day.

“I can’t wait for tomorrow.”

The astronomer thought this year was a great time for people to learn more about Matariki and venture outside to catch a glimpse of the cluster, ahead of next year’s inaugural public holiday.

“It will give people an opportunity to familiarise themselves with where it is and ... become accustomed to Matariki and how to find it in the sky before next year.”

Matamua said seeing more people eager to celebrate Matariki was “very humbling”, and that it was great to see more New Zealander’s embracing this unique aspect of Māori culture, rather than only celebrating imported traditions.

“It’s becoming part of our national identity ... This is special, and it’s unique, and it’s built around things like sharing and fellowship and feasting and remembering those who have passed on.

“With those kinds of principles that underpin it, I think it’s a wonderful fit and reason for people to come together.”

Matamua thought the increase in celebratory events was proof the nation was coming of age.

“There's a lot more people learning the Māori language and interested in Māori culture ... wonderful things that really can unite us all together.

“[I’m] hoping it’s the beginning of something really great.”
