Ironically enough, it was the CIA's covert introduction of LSD to (among others) unwitting college students in order to study what the effects would be with greater doses over time, which helped to usher in the counter culture movement. Part of the original idea was to use it to get rid of certain mindsets, or the ego altogether, but it ended up creating more of what it was supposed to eliminate in the first place.

Arkansas hunter dies after being attacked by a deer he'd just shot
BY SOPHIE LEWIS
OCTOBER 24, 2019 / 4:01 PM / CBS NEWS
Image
In a shocking twist of fate, an experienced Arkansas hunter was attacked by a deer he had just shot in the woods on Tuesday evening. The hunter later died after suffering puncture wounds from the deer's antlers.

Officials said 66-year-old Thomas Alexander was hunting in Yellville, Arkansas on Tuesday when he shot a buck using a muzzleloader. As he approached the animal, believing it was dead, it attacked him.

"He apparently went over to the buck and it got up and attacked him," said Keith Stephens, the chief of communications for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission.

Alexander was able to call his wife and emergency responders planned to airlift him out of the woods, but he stopped breathing before they could get in the helicopter, so he was taken by ambulance instead.

Alexander was pronounced dead at Baxter Regional Medical Center in Mountain Home, Stephens said. An official cause of death has not been released.

"We're not sure that he died from the deer. It could have been other medical issues. It's my understanding that there's not going to be an autopsy," Stephens told CBS News. "The hospital did note that he had several puncture wounds."

Stephens said the situation is "very rare." A similar attack by a wounded deer occurred in south Arkansas in 2016, but the hunter in that case survived.

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission has sent two K-9 units to search for the deer, but have been unsuccessful. It is not known whether or not it survived the incident.

So I went into the nearest big-box store to purchase a padlock and a cable because there are some things I keep outside which need to be locked up. The cashier totaled the transaction and asked if I'd like to donate $ to the Cancer Foundation. When I got home, I noticed tiny print on both the cable and the padlock (one made in Taiwan the other, China) that contain items which just might promote cancer. I'm returning those things soon.

Ironic to ask if I (future chemo-therapy patient?) want to donate to help as I'm purchasing something which may cause my future illness/death. Very circular. Seems this store via national trade policies is making potential victims out of their customers and asking those future victims to kick in some money to help out.

A scientific meeting on coronaviruses was cancelled due to coronavirus
March 10, 2020

ttps://qz.com/1816054/a-conference-on-coronaviruses-is-cancelled-due-to-coronavirus/

By Katherine Ellen Foley

The latest event to be cancelled as a result of the spread of the novel coronavirus is, ironically, a scientific meeting on coronaviruses.

On March 9, Nido2020, the official meeting of the International Nidovirus Symposium, was postponed to 2021. The meeting, which happens only once every three years, was set to take place this May 10 to 14 in the Netherlands.

“We started noticing that people were hesitating to register due to all the uncertainty,” said Marjolein Kikkert, a microbiologist at the Leiden University Medical Center who was leading the conference’s planning committee, in an email to Quartz. “The expanding outbreak in Europe in the last week made us feel we should take responsibility and set the good example as coronavirologists to not further spread the virus ourselves.”

“Nidovirus” is an order of viruses that includes coronaviruses, like SARS-CoV-2 (the novel coronavirus going around now), SARS-CoV (severe acute respiratory syndrome, which emerged in 2003), and MERS (Middle Eastern respiratory syndrome, which emerged in 2012). The order also includes arteriviruses, a group that can infect horses, pigs, monkeys, and mice; and roniviruses, a group that can infect shellfish.

The 14 previous nidovirus symposiums have functioned like any other scientific meeting: Attendees would present research, find collaboration opportunities, and get to know other members of a relatively small field within microbiology. In an email sent to Quartz on Feb. 28, Kikkert said she and the planning committee were hoping they could avoid cancelling the meeting in order to exchange as much information as possible—especially about the new coronavirus circulating.

The group is still trying to figure out if they can share information remotely some time in May, although it would be a challenge because some of the attendees were planning to come from China; time differences complicate the scheduling.

Normally, about 150 to 200 scientists attend the meeting, according to Bart Haagmans, virologist at Erasmus Medical Center in the Netherlands, who was also planning the meeting. Kikkert hopes that, by postponing the physical meeting, the conference next year can have even more attendees.

Coronavirus: Mexicans demand crackdown on Americans crossing the border

Image
A border wall divides Nogales, Arizona from the Mexican state of Sonora.

Mexican protesters have shut a US southern border crossing amid fears that untested American travellers will spread coronavirus.

Residents in Sonora, south of the US state of Arizona, have promised to block traffic into Mexico for a second day after closing a checkpoint for hours on Wednesday.

They wore face masks and held signs telling Americans to "stay at home".

Mexico has fewer than 500 confirmed Covid-19 cases and the US over 65,000.

The border is supposed to be closed to all except "essential" business, but protesters said there has been little enforcement and no testing by authorities.
