The elephants at the Belgian zoo of Planckendael aren't so lucky. Calf Tarzen passed away last night. He was being bottle-fed after his mother passed away earlier this month. Tarzen is the third elephant to die at the zoo in one month.

Aside from the pachyderms, the zoo also lost a lion, which was shot after she had escaped her enclosure.

The police in Ommen (east-Netherlands, near Emmen) received a phonecall from a distraught citizen who noticed there was an elephant in his front yard.

As they arrived with a strait-jacket, they found enough piles of poop to convince the guy wasn't off his rocker. The pachyderm was staying at a nearby camping with his circus and had walked away from his caretaker during his daily walk, munching on the pears the unfortunate citizen had in his yard.

At present in The Netherlands it is illegal to have wild animals like elephants and tigers perform in a circus (I'll have to explain Dumbo to my kids). This specific elephant Buba is an exception - he belongs to circus Freiwald. He's not allowed to perform, but he was so pining away in the zoo they put him in, they were licensed to take him on the road again. Buba is let out daily and so well-behaved she even waits for the traffic light to go green at the zebra crossing.

Here she is crashing a car boot sale:
