 Post subject: Double bass drummers?

How did the double bass drum kit get started? I know a lot of good drummers have used one (Terry, Chester, Keith Moon, Ginger Baker). I'm guessing it started with some jazz dude, but I can't think of which one.

Pardon me for joining so late the discussion...

Something just occurred to me along the lines of Zappa's Anthropology of a Rock Band: It must be, at least in Rock, a Freudian thing, like "Girls, look at me, I am banging my BIG drum set...
