My Dad flew B-17's over Italy late WW2. He never really talked about it.

We I was young, we had a very close friend of our family who did WW2.
Deaf, dumb and blind when I asked him to tell me about it.

Yeah, my great uncle was like that. One of our family would ask him about it, and he said no.

As children of the seen and not heard generation our secret to getting info from the aunts uncles
and grand parents, was to become invisible during the family gatherings. In the early 60's the war was
still a big part of peoples recent history, and would always came up, the booze would flow
the photos would come out songs would be sung and stories that, initially we barely
understood would be told.
My mothers side of the family served throughout the pacific islands, NZ and Australia.
My fathers side of the family slipped out of Singapore as the Japanese were slipping in,
leaving a brother behind who was serving with the Burma rifles.....hair raising stuff.....

The story of that journey took years to come out, my father was 13 at the time and
despite years of probing, mentioned it to me maybe twice in my life-time, his older brothers,
my uncles, were much more forthcoming when I was of an age to be told.

My first father in-law served in Egypt, just add whiskey = wall to wall horrific war stories.....

I remember all those Beefeater bottles when they played cards.
There was so much drinking.
It was a lost generation the one who went to war.
I resent that when I listen to "The final Cut" of Pink Floyd.

War is man's failure.

Even so, my father was an alcoholic. Again, he never really talked about it. Dropping bombs on thousands of people must have made an imprint. He was so bitter about the war and the whole Nazi thing, he would never let us watch Hogans Heros when we were kids. He felt the whole german/nazi/americans held prisoner in a concentration camp was made a mockery. Pretty intense.

I said War is the biggest man's failure but I have a deep and profound respect for those who go.
Many of them don't give a shit about politics. They go to defend their families.

Antonina Zubkova (1920 — 1950) was a captain and squadron navigator in the women’s 125th Guards Dive Bomber Regiment during World War II.

During her fourth year of university, Zubkova had to pause her studies due to the German invasion of the Soviet Union. She was accepted into the women’s aviation group in October 1941.

Interesting interview with Baldur von Schirach, Head of the Hitler Youth and Gauleiter of Vienna. In some ways, I find him more honest than Speer (Hitler's architect and Minister for Armaments), who, like him, got 20 years in Spandau https://youtu.be/LSPP654W_SQ

Well. Albert Speer wasn't honest at all. He could hardly believe his luck, that they didn't hang him, too.

Agreed. Though I think his 3 autobiographical books are very good sources on anything that does not include his own involvement in Crimes against humanity.

The Scholl siblings and Stauffenberg are well known. But there were more, who tried to eliminate Hitler. Generalmajor Henning von Tresckow was involved into several attempts to assassinate Hitler.

Soldiers, Sailors, and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force:

You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months.

The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you.

In company with our brave Allies and brothers-in-arms on other Fronts you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world.

Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well equipped, and battle-hardened. He will fight savagely.

But this is the year 1944. Much has happened since the Nazi triumphs of 1940-41. The United Nations1 have inflicted upon the Germans great defeats, in open battle, man-to-man. Our air offensive has seriously reduced their strength in the air and their capacity to wage war on the ground. Our Home Fronts have given us an overwhelming superiority in weapons and munitions of war, and placed at our disposal great reserves of trained fighting men. The tide has turned. The free men of the world are marching together to victory.

I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty, and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full victory.

Good Luck! And let us all beseech the blessing of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking.

-Dwight D. Eisenhower's Pre-Invasion D-Day Speech

Interesting - a very good speech by today's standards, by a tactical genius, but an average speaker by the contemporary standards of 1944. The question is posed - how did the average sink so fast, so quickly?
