Strong winds, heavy rain causing havoc in Wellington
1 day ago

Wild weather in the Wellington region brought down trees, delayed flights and prompted warnings for drivers.

Callouts about heavy rain overnight shifted to problems with high winds early morning.

Trees were down in Johnsonville and Maupuia, and there was a slip in Northland.

The Paekakariki Hill Road to the Kapiti Coast was closed after strong wind brought down a tree on the road.

Met Service said southerly gusts of 104 km/h [64.6mph] were recorded in the suburb of Kelburn overnight, other high suburbs experienced wind gusts of around 90 km/h [55.9mph], while on Mt Kaukau the winds hit 146 km/h [90.7mph].

Wellington City Council spokesperson Richard MacLean urged care on the roads.

"Just take care if you're driving or riding a motorcycle or a bike - you may go round a tight corner on one of our twisty roads and end up with a bit of tree on the road in front of you or some rocks down."

A landslip in in Whitby, Porirua, last night damaged two properties on Moonsail Drive. The council said residents were safely evacuated by Fire and Emergency from one, and the other was unoccupied.

A neighbour told RNZ the occupants of the worst hit of the two properties had left just the day before, and that clay and dirt from the slip had come close to the house.

The Wellington region had heavy falls of rain overnight with the Lower Hutt suburb of Wainuiomata recording 69.8mm of rain in the 13 hours to 7am, Met Service said.

It is the second major dump of rain after torrential downpours on Sunday led to flash flooding in Plimmerton, leaving 15 houses uninhabitable.

The strong wind caused delays to some flights in and out of the capital and ferry sailings across Wellington harbour were cancelled.

The 7.30am Interislander ferry from Picton to Wellington was cancelled, after the 2am sailing from Wellington was called off. The next boat was leaving Picton at 11am.

Met Service has a strong wind warning in place for Wellington and the Kapiti Coast north of Otaki, as well as the Marlborough Sounds and the coast north of Cape Campbell.

The forecaster said north westerlies are expected to rise to gale in exposed places on Wednesday evening and it may issue a warning nearer the time.

In Bay of Plenty, meanwhile, a heavy rain warning remained in place for the Wairoa district with falls of up to 15mm an hour forecast.

'Be prepared': Severe gales, blizzards, 12-metre waves as two Southern Ocean storms blast NZ
Caitlin Ellis 8 hours ago

Severe gales, giant swells, rain and snow are about to shock the country as two Southern Ocean storms track very near to New Zealand.

Image

Severe gales, giant swells, rain and snow are about to shock the country.

The first storm will trail past on Sunday followed by a larger one moving through on Wednesday.

Both storms bring with them a dramatic temperature drop with daytime highs failing to reach double digits in some places.

New Zealand often experiences dramatic cold changes during summer, but according to Weather Watch, this one will be more "potent" than most and comes with severe gales.

It warns everyone travelling in remote areas to take caution as this is "not the usual cool change in summer".

"This upcoming weather is being generated by two powerful storms in the Southern Ocean and severe weather is highly likely."

Image
© Provided by Newshub
To top it all off the West Coast of the South Island will see some massive swells rolling in by mid-week, expected to reach 12.0 metres [39.3 foot].

Snow and rain

Snow flurries are expected on the Southern Alps as early as Saturday night and will see heavier snowfall as the second low moves in midweek.

Met Service has heavy rain warnings in place for Nelson, Richmond Ranges, Dunedin, Clutha, South of Riversdale, and Fiordland until Sunday night, as well as a heavy rain warning for the Westland Ranges in place until 1:00am Monday.

Near-freezing temperatures

Wind chill is set to get down to freezing in northern Southland, according to Rural Weather. Dunedin will experience an air temp of 10.0°C [50.0°F] on Wednesday that will feel more like a chilly 6.0°C [42.8°F].

Weather Watch is warning those in Fiordland National Park will feel the brunt of the chill, the daytime high for Milford Sound currently sitting at just 5.0°C [41.0°F] for Wednesday but due to wind chill will feel more like 1.0°C [33.8°F].

"Trampers, campers and hikers in these areas will need winter gear and be prepared for blizzards higher up in the ranges," says Weather Watch head forecaster Philip Duncan.

"If this was happening in August we’d be looking at a significant sea-level snow event for the lower South Island. A stormier than usual Southern Ocean since spring 2020 is the driver of this much colder-than-usual change for parts of New Zealand."

While all Kiwis will be facing a frosty summer temperature drop, the top half of the North Island is set to be less exposed.

"thhti Auckland will drop down to maybe 19.0°C [66.2°F] as the daytime high on Wednesday but it will be the westerly winds that may be of more notice with at least three or four windy days in a row on the way with gusts to gale force at times," says Duncan.

Gales

Wellington is expected to be in the "thick" of it, with four days of possible gale-force winds starting Sunday. Tie-down your trampolines for the expected peak on Tuesday where damaging gusts could reach over 120 km/hr [74.5 mph].

High winds will also impact eastern areas such as the Coromandel Peninsula, where windy westerlies may near gale force for a time.

Thunderstorms are possible in the west, which will also see gale-force winds as air funnels up through the Cook Strait Area.

Christchurch will be able to escape the freezing temperatures but not the wind, with gusts reaching up to 100 km/hr [62.1 mph].

Rough weather on the way for Wellington, Canterbury, West Coast

Several parts of the country could be in for some rough weather in the next 24 hours; including Wellington, Canterbury and the West Coast.

Image
© RNZ
Claire Eastham-Farrelly

Met Service says an active front will bring brief, heavy rain to the west coast of the South Island and the Tararua Ranges in the Lower North Island today.

Gale force north-west winds are also likely for Wellington and Wairarapa southwards, including the Canterbury High Country.

And high winds approaching gale force are forecast for coastal Clutha south to Owaka and coastal Southland including Stewart island tomorrow.

But a heavy rain watch has been lifted for Fiordland, and a strong wind watch has been lifted for Southland and Fiordland.
