More heat on the way as North Pole temps spike by 30 Celsius

Scott Sutherland
Meteorologist/Science Writer

Thursday, February 9, 2017, 3:10 PM - Things are heating up in the Arctic, yet again, this week, as one storm has already caused temperatures near the North Pole to spike by nearly 30oC on Wednesday, and even more heat is on the way in the days to come.

Keep an eye on North Pole temperatures on Wednesday night and Friday morning of this week, as they will be approaching the freezing mark.

That may not seem like anything remarkable, but right now, in early February, in the deep darkness of the Arctic winter, 0oC is roughly 30C above normal for what thermometers should be reading for that part of the world.

Here in Santa Cruz, we've gotten six-and-a-half inches of rain in the last week. And up in the Santa Cruz Mountains, there are places where they've gotten twice that.

Yesterday (Monday) was the worst. I got three flash flood warnings on my phone. Fortunately I don't live in an area that's subject to flooding, but a lot of people do. The San Lorenzo River comes out of the mountains and goes right through the middle of town. It carries with it all the logs, coke cans, volleyballs, syringes and ugly plastic things that it picks up along the way. All that crap washes out to the Monterey Bay and ends up on local beaches. Yum.

Mountain folk are used to self-reliance, so they tend to be prepared for conditions like this. Yesterday, a gigantic fir tree fell in the wind and blocked all four lanes of Highway 17 (the main road between Santa Cruz and San Jose). So a bunch of people just got out of their cars and/or trucks, grabbed their chainsaws and got to work disassembling the tree. Within a couple hours, the highway was open again.

All's well that ends well... :)

Last week Wellington got slammed with the remnants of cyclone Debbie, a Months rain in a day recorded in some suburbs locally, a bit of flooding, slips and road closures, but we got off lightly. Up north the town of Edgecumbe was flooded when the mighty Rangataiki River breached a stop bank.

and cyclone Cook is on the way, which could reportedly bring more rain

Yee Haaa, Cyclone Cook has smacked the top of the North Island and is heading our way leaving a trail of destruction in it's wake.

They are comparing this storm to a storm that hit Wellington in 1968 causing wide spread flooding and the Wahine an interisland ferry ran aground and capsized in the mouth of Wellington harbor 51 people drowned.

The hatches are battened down and the gum boots are at the ready.....

Hot! 30 degrees C. My wife went swimming - it was still a little nippy. I'm still wrapped up in endless exams 'till tomorrow.

Our forecasters had been predicting a mild winter, but somebody left the door open in the Antarctic which has given us the wintery blast.

Which is pretty tame by your standards.

Wellington right now is: 9°C (48.2°F)

Max: 10°C (50°F)

Now this is interesting, I live in the northern hemisphere, why is my sink going the same direction as the arrows in the southern hemisphere in the online photos of coriolis...your sink goes opposite mine, right Mr. Ghost?
