Kind of had biggest storm of the last ten years warning for the last couple of days leading into today but it has been much milder than predicted. I was hoping for a little more activity as I’m just a tad below the snow line in the Sierra Nevada foothills. Oh, well.

Gettin' a heavy dose of some sorta weird shit. They're calling it snow, but it's more like hard bits of styrofoam.

Being in the 40's/7's of late, the warm roads cleared themselves nicely by the end of the day.

lol, no usual 4 day warnings of a snowstorm coming...
...then last night a red banner for snow conditions, yeah, no warning and then a snow alert, great April fool's joke...
...no, they couldn't do that though, they'd get sued by everyone who rented snowmobiles, or took the day off to go skiing...
..got up this morning and sure enough, snowing like hell...

Snow and thunderstorm blast set to freeze New Zealand

"THE COLD IS COMING."

This is the ominous warning from the Met Service, with blistering cold weather set to blast New Zealand next week. A series of southerly fronts bringing icy-cold air from the Antarctic region will hammer Kiwis with severe weather.

"These weather features will bring gale-force winds, heavy rain and thunderstorms to many places over the first half of next week, with the main risk of severe weather occurring on Tuesday/Wednesday," the Met Service warns.

"Snow is also in the forecast, with heavy snow possible about higher parts of both islands, and lesser amounts down to around 400m in the South Island, and 700m in the North Island."

NIWA says it will be the coldest temperatures since last spring, with actual air temperatures more typical of July or August than April.

"It's the South Island that is the most exposed to the cold snap, with snow on the ranges and some alpine passes and only mid-single-digit highs for some towns," WeatherWatch.co.nz says.

"Motorists are advised to be prepared for snow on the roads and highways in some South Island regions across next week, especially Tuesday and Wednesday."

WeatherWatch.co.nz now says there may even be snow on the North Island's Desert Road on Wednesday, with the high in Waiouru dropping from 12°C on Tuesday to just 5°C on Wednesday, with snow and showers.

Fun weekend ahead! Two ice storms. One on Saturday, and one on Sunday.
"Ice build up of 10 to 20 mm (3/4 of an inch) appears quite likely across the region by Sunday morning, with gusty northeast winds to 70 km/h."
"Ice accumulations of this magnitude combined with gusty northeast winds to 70 km/h may result in widespread power outages due to fallen tree limbs and power lines.
Dangerous winter driving conditions are expected on untreated roads Saturday and Sunday."
