Agreed , but there are a lot of "shredder" fans out there who do think that faster = better.
This isn't my cup of tea , but i do have a little respect for the dedication it takes move so fast around a fretboard :) .

so true...
let's round them up, throw them in box cars, burn them alive, and try to forget it all.

A little extreme when all we need to do is remove a finger or three .

The arms, go for the arms. It could still be feasible to noodle with a few missing digits, though creativity is a must.

This song is much quieter and has not such "percussion,", but the fretboard technique is very similar, especially towards the end...

Michael Hedges

And then there's Wish :)

Listening to music involves comprehension and engagement. I just can't get into that ridiculously fast stuff. I can appreciate the technique for a few minutes before glazing over. I like that Hedges piece, though, partly because it isn't over the top and actually sounds musical. I could sit down and relax while listening to that. While appreciating those pyro-technicians, I have no interest in buying their albums and listening to them.

And while I'm at it, that oodles of noodles comment is obviously based on the idea of noodling.

That looks like David Letterman doing an impersonation of Charles Darwin.

not for me.
in fact, a majority of the music that holds my interest is the stuff that has me going "WTF!?! i don't even...".

too much comprehension can be a dead end.

Isn't that "WTF" feeling what happens when comprehension meets something new? I also tend to listen to things that push the boundaries of traditional music, but I feel that the ATTEMPTED comprehension of such is where the fun is. I believe it's impossible for anyone to completely understand a piece of art outside of the person who created it. The purpose of music or any art, for me, is to be taken on a journey; without at least some level of understanding this really isn't possible.
If someone just sat down at a piano in front of me and started banging on the keys with absolutely no purpose I would get bored very quick.
