Do you watch them? Do you have a favorite this year? Seems like Slumdog is going to take best picture.

I have kept the results for the past six years or so, along with the Razzies, for whatever reason. I'm a data freak and keep stuff like that, just like the birthdays and death dates I collect.
But sitting up all night for silly speeches, no, not me. I kinda hope Heath Ledger wins though, aside from him sharing birthday with me, I hope he'll get a more pleasant memorial than Dendermonde.

I have never once watched it until the end, that is, even if I watch it I always miss all the "biggies". Hope that helps.

So sooner rather than later eh?

I usually watch the first hour, tire of it, and watch something else. But it's fun for a bit.

we don't watch tv at all anymore. we cancelled our cable-tv about six months ago.
we only kept the tv to watch dvd's on.
I'm a big movie fan, but the oscars...? no, don't really care about them.

They are taking place literally right outside of my door. I live a block from the Kodak theater. It's crazy around here. I had to walk blocks out of the way to get home from the grocery store today because I was not allowed to walk down my own street.

yes, they're silly, but i still watch them every year. this time around, since hugh jackman was the host, there were a couple dance numbers (missed the first--taped the show, so i'll watch later), something i can live without. yes, bbp, heath ledger won. sort of a foregone conclusion. nothing against him, but some people vote that way. i did hear the great notices he received way before the nominations, so i think it was his talent. there are a lot of people who think mickey roarke wuz robbed, but since i didn't see any of the nominated actors--and i only saw a couple movies nominated for anything--i can't judge.

zappagirl, i understand there were protestors outside the kodak theater--sean penn mentioned "hate signs" on the way in during his speech. were they against "milk" or about gay rights? too bad if that's the case. every once in a while there is a nice speech...but it's been a few years. anyway, i think even the goofs and jaw-dropping moments make it part of the show.

I saw a little bit, but I hadn't seen any of the movies except "Wall-E", so I didn't really care much about the results. I thought whoever produced/designed the show did a good job making it different from prior years and giving it a more personal touch when it came to the nominees. Hugh Jackman made a nice host and I thought his intro schtick was quite brilliant. The Red Carpet stuff before the event was pretty corny as usual - giving ridiculous attention to what people are wearing, whom they're with, and perpetuating the the whole movie-star-larger-than-life fiction, but that's just part of the game I guess. My wife stayed up for most of it, but after an hour of off-and-on viewing, I retreated to the mancave to listen to some evil music to bring myself back down to Earth.

I watch them. I know it is silly, but it is good fun. Sean Penn was very cool in his acceptance speak this night starting by addressing the audience by "You commie homo-loving sons of guns".

Since an Oscar isn't a quality feature for a good movie I didn't watch it.

i don't know if this counts, but, Walt Fowler plays trumpet on the 'Alan Menken Album' by Debbie Gravitte.
Alan Menken was nominated in the original song category for his opuses in the Disney film, Enchanted.

also there's an Oscar Zappa on facebook

I 'm not exaclty sure, once I made it home from from the gym & grocery store, (having to walk blocks out of my way because they won't even let you walk down certain streets), I stayed in and as far away from it all as possible.

And did you want Slum Dog Square Pants to win stuff?

Award shows suck. Sorry. They don't award achievement or quality, they award popularity, Slumdog is a perfect example. Despite the long overdue heads up by the Grammys this yr., I still won't watch them either.

So they only award popularity unless it's someone you like?

No, they only award popularity, period. What I like is not relevant, I could only wish to have that kind of influence. :)
