For those who dont know: Todd Rundgren is an american pop composer with some background in experimental music..(Utopia)

They are both said to have an high IQ and both are very sarcastisc in their statements in general...todd is a multinstrumentalist while zappa music is more multifaceted then Todds

Anyone know if they have ever met or talked about the other ?

Todd's the man. Dunno if they've met, but I doubt there's any "influence" either way. I always wondered if FZ was referring to Rundgren in "The Blue Light" when he says, "Excuse me, Todd", and I searched my Rundgren collection for any references to "squid decor". About a year ago on this forum some people offered their takes on what this "Excuse Me Todd" quote referred to, and it had nothing to do with Todd Rundgren, but I don't recall exactly what they said. I guess when you have 3000+ posts you tend to forget a few. Anyhoo, I like Todd, for what it's worth. Recently I've been listening to a lot of Utopia.

In high school I had a friend who was into TR big time. I just never enjoyed his stuff. He is talented and all, I just can't get into it. I will give him credit for raising Steven Tyler's kid, he did a better job than Tyler most likely would have done.

I'm picking Zappa to win in the fourth round, by TKO. People just don't remember how tough he was!

I like Todd Rundgren, I don't know why, I just do. Despite being a largely pop type album I really like 'Something/Anything?'

Todds Something Anything was the best... I still love him.

Spent a week in LA chatting with MFROG Labat. (Original keyboard Synthesizer Player with Utopia) way back when. He was totally off the wall but told great Todd stories.

He now lives in France and is doing some really interesting work tied to the Middle East..

His real name is Jean Yves Labat De Rossi...

He is on the right in this photo with me taken July 1980 at the Beverly Terrace Motel in LA. This was taken the week Peter Sellers died. I only remember this since Peter had a reservation at this hotel for breakfast the day he died.

I've been meaning to listen to more Rundgren. I've always liked what I heard.

Agreed on Wizard/True Star and Something/Anything, Todd is not up to those, I also love Runt - Todd was wonderful in the studio

Todd is second only to Frank on my list.

A little trivia, Frank and Todd produced Grand Funk albums.

Todd: We're an American Band & Shinin' on

Frank: Good Singin' Good Playin'

They both utilized Flo and Eddie too.

Frank: duh

I enjoy Initiation by Todd Rundgren. But, then, that's me. Born to Synthesize!

I'm not familiar with any of Rundgrens music except for Hello It's Me. I guess that was enough to make me not want to hear anymore.
Anyone have any Rundgren recommendations?

The older, the better! (although "Initiation" is my favourite, too. Side 2, especially)

A Wizard, A True Star - this effort, from '73 I think, included everything from soul singing, ballads and real rocking tunes. The studio effects on the LP blended the styles together and the thing holds up very well. It is a lovely effort, and one of his best, INMHO.
