Quote:
Delmak-O is a dangerous planet. Though there are only fourteen citizens, no one can trust anyone else and death can strike at any moment. The planet is vast and largely unexplored, populated mostly by gelatinous cube-shaped beings that give cryptic advice in the form of anagrams. Deities can be spoken to directly via a series of prayer amplifiers and transmitters, but they may not be happy about it. And the mysterious building in the distance draws all the colonists to it, but when they get there each sees a different motto on the front. The mystery of this structure and the secrets contained within drive this mind-bending novel.

Its pretty funny...something light hearted for a change :)

tons of references to songs and musicians from the 70's and 80's, i'm waiting for the zappa references.

year zero was the year aliens heard their first earthman song, the theme to Welcome Back Kotter, they went nuts over it...never heard anything like that (aliens cant write music). :)

Low-level entertainment lawyer Nick Carter thinks it’s a prank, not an alien encounter, when a redheaded mullah and a curvaceous nun show up at his office. But Frampton and Carly are highly advanced (if bumbling) extraterrestrials. The entire cosmos, they tell him, has been hopelessly hooked on American pop songs ever since “Year Zero” (1977 to us), resulting in the biggest copyright violation since the Big Bang and bankrupting the whole universe. Nick has just been tapped to clean up this mess before things get ugly. Thankfully, this unlikely galaxy-hopping hero does know a thing or two about copyright law. Now, with Carly and Frampton as his guides, Nick has forty-eight hours to save humanity—while hoping to wow the hot girl who lives down the hall from him.

It's a pretty good view of the midwest and the south so far.

"I am made out of water. You wouldn’t know it, because I have it bound in. My friends are made out of water, too. All of them. The problem for us is that not only do we have to walk around without being absorbed by the ground but we also have to earn our livings.
Actually there’s even a greater problem. We don’t feel at home anywhere we go. Why is that?"

I watched a tv thing a while ago with Jimmy Page the Egde and that White Stripes kid Jack White, they were noodling away in a kind of relaxed jam session thing and it struck me that Jimmy doesn't do relaxed, he could have just as easily have been that 25 year old playing a stadium.....classic

The French version of "The plot against America" by Philip Roth.

There's a lot of things in there that looks like what we're living with that Trump administration.
A bit part of it being the willfull blindness of American folks.

Next one will be "American pastoral", again by Philip Roth.

From chapter 4
Quote:
"I'm commissioning a rock mass to be given at Grace the Christmas." Scrutinizing me he said, "What is your opinion about Frank Zappa?

I was at a loss for an answer.
"We would arrange for the actual service to be recorded," Tim continued. "So it could be released as an album. Captain Beefheart has also been recommended to me. And there were several other names offered. Where could I get a Frank Zappa album to listen to?

"At a record store," Jeff said
"Is Frank Zappa black?" Tim asked.

Did Brian's book (above), now I'm getting another side of the story. Interesting, same story, but two different people's views of it.

I always enjoy the anticipation of getting FZ related goodies in the post , but seven days is the point at which I make enquiries with the vendor or delivery Co.
Hope it turns up soon .

What if you were thrown into a foreign society, never to see home again? What would you do, and could you survive?

Joe Colsco boarded a flight from San Francisco to Chicago to attend a national chemistry meeting. He would never set foot on Earth again.

On planet Anyar, Joe is found unconscious on a beach of a large island inhabited by humans where the level of technology is similar to Earth circa 1700. He awakes amid strangers speaking an unintelligible language and struggles to accept losing his previous life and finding a place in a society with different customs, needing a way to support himself and not knowing a single soul. His worry about finding a place is assuaged when he finds ways to apply his knowledge of chemistry - as long as he is circumspect in introducing new knowledge not too far in advance of the planet's technology and being labelled a demon.

As he adjusts, Joe finds that he has be dropped into a developing clash between the people who cared for him, and for whom he develops an affinity, and a military power from elsewhere on the planet - a power with designs on conquest. Unaware, Joseph Colsco has been poured into a crucible where time and trials will transform him in ways he could never have imagined.
