Freak Out! My Life with Frank Zappa
"They were big favourites with some male visitors. I remember walking into the kitchen and two of the GTOs were in a drunken food fight with Rod Stewart and Jeff Beck. Frank just walked through with his nose in the air and I was very annoyed - though Rod and Jeff were very charming when they hadn't been drinking."

I understand the plot is convoluted (multiple points-of-view) and requires the reader to be extra focused.

two Oxford students go hitchhiking in 1968 across Europe and up in Czechoslvakia on a coin-toss.
It was a good year and a very bad year to be there. They get caught when the tanks rolled in to Prague.
Will they get out? Will inocence survive? Does anyone remember Milada Horakova?

It's funny, I began a record exchange with my Czech friend Vlada Michna in 1974... Records were fun, but I'd always write about politics too, about the US government and so on...and he'd always answer about his family and friends and music...and I'd write more about politics, and he's say he'd met a girl and was gonna get married... I'd write about politics and he'd tell me of his new son...

Then the Velvet Revolution and the floodgates opened, he could write that it was unwise to take chances before because his letters could be shined through in screenings, so don't take chances.

Funny thing too he was all censored before, and now they've gone the other way with some really wild lyrics and stuff...and here in the US we now have Parental Advisories if we say fuck, and antiwar songs* are not allowed on MTV and so on...

How the situation reverses, Bill of Rights suspended, all our emails and phone calls recorded, arrest and hold indefinitely without charges or access to a layer, Obama executing citizens without trial and nobody says shit...

And we're lined up at their door for more...

* They've actually faded right out... During Viet Nam we had shitloads of Antiwar songs, Give Peace a Chance and all that...now antiwar songs are pretty rare...

Filter - Anthems for the Damned
They also did a remix of this whole album that's pretty good...Kudos to Filter for their Anti-war activism...

Reading...
Judas - Amos Oz
Chers fanatiques - Amos Oz

And I just finished the french version of "Diary of a dirty old man" by Bukowski.

Next ones:
Une histoire d'amour et de ténèbres - Amos Oz (yeah, I know...)
French version of "I'm your man" - biography of Leonard Cohen

Just finishing this up

In one passage a U.S. army officer feels bad after leading a morning attack on a tribe. He killed numerous men, women and children. One Sioux child who was four or six years old was left wandering around the carnage crying for her dead mother. He gave thought to adopting child and raising her as his own "since I killed her mother"

After a short time, a junior officer approached him and said something to the effect of 'but sir, what would your wife think if you brought one of these heathens into her home to live?' So the officer rethought his idea and just leaves the child to die alone. So totally brutally cruel.
