One of my favorites.
Quote:
Thomas Jerome Newton is a humanoid alien who comes to Earth seeking to construct a spaceship to ferry others from his home planet, Anthea, to Earth. Anthea is experiencing a terrible drought after many nuclear wars, and the population has dwindled to less than 300. Their own starships are unusable for lack of fuel and 500 years of neglect. The Antheans have no water, an abundance of food that is slowly dwindling, and feeble solar power. Like all Antheans, Newton is super-intelligent, but he has been selected for this mission because he has the physical strength necessary to function in Earth's hotter climate and higher gravity.
Arriving at Earth in a lifeboat, Newton first lands in the state of Kentucky. He quickly becomes familiar with the environment and forms a plan. Using advanced technology from his home planet, Newton patents many inventions, and amasses incredible wealth as the head of a technology-based conglomerate. He plans to use this wealth to construct space vehicles for the rest of the Anthean population.
Along the way he meets Betty Jo, who falls in love with him. He does not return these feelings, but takes her and his curious fuel-technician Nathan Bryce as his friends, while he runs his company in the shadows. Betty Jo introduces Newton to many Earth customs, such as church, fashion, and alcohol. However, his appetite for alcohol soon leads to problems, as he begins to experience intense emotions unfamiliar to Antheans.
Eventually, Newton's alien nature is discovered by Nathan Bryce, and it comes as a relief to Newton to be able to reveal his secret to someone. He expresses the hope that the Antheans he will ferry to Earth will flourish and use their superior intelligence to help Earth achieve peace, prosperity, and safety.
However, the CIA arrests Newton, having followed him since his appearance on Earth and having recorded this private conversation with Bryce. They submit him to rigorous tests and analysis, resulting in conclusive evidence of his alien identity, but decide not to release the results for fear they would simply not be believed, and possibly even embarrass the government. Newton is released, but is immediately arrested by the FBI, which begins its own examinations. Their final examination is an X-ray of Newton's skull, through his eyes. Newton, whose eyes are sensitive to X-rays, is unable to stop them and is blinded. The story of Newton's blinding becomes a scandal which leads to the fall of the government and eventually to catastrophe.
Newton, speaking to Bryce for the last time, explains bitterly that he is unable to continue his spaceship project because of his blindness and because of planetary alignments which have changed during his captivity. He records a message which he hopes to broadcast via radio to his home planet.

The Louisiana Purchase doubles the size of the United States for the measly price of 15 million dollars. President Jefferson needs to know more and sets these guys on a 2 year mission to explore strange new lands and go up against huge bears that keep on coming after hit by 5 or 6 bullets. And you thought Star Trek was bold.

OK, I've been on about a 10 fun-book roll, one more fun one...

Image

...and then it's the next Microsoft exam, 70-411... fun stuff, I have a little kingdom of VM's in a hyped up laptop :D

This'll end the sci-fi for a few months, unless Book 5 gets written for the fantastic Columbus Day - Black Ops series, that's gotta be one of the best series ever :D I'm hangin on that book like I used to hang on new zappa albums :)

With the original astronauts either dead or in their final few laps around our star, I figured it was high time to give this one a go. I've wanted to read it for some time. Those guys were and remain something incredibly special. True pioneers of the space-age. Theirs are the shoulders the current and future generations stand on.

I remember watching the snowy images from the rabbit ears on the black and white on the AV cart during the Mercury/Gemini/Apollo programs, 5th grade and such. Classes stopped so we could watch the launches, maneuvers, re-entries/pickups, whatever fell during school hours. In retrospect, school was pretty good about that, we saw a lot of launches, the kids got to see the whole thing.

Radio blackout and parachutes.
That's how you got back from space :)

Cruddy by Lynda Barry. Read it many years back (came out in 1999.), and decided to dig it out for a re-read. A friend bought it for me and had the author sign it. "Hi Diane! This is a freaky book!" Indeed it is, unusual, freaky, and wonderful. And I've just started.

The eleventh in a series of a CIA spy in modern times. Complex plot told simply and directly, providing enough detail to make it very realistsic. The bad guy in this one is a top level CIA traitor who wants to get rid of as many spooks and heads of state as possible with the help of ISIS. This is the first I've read in the genre in decades. 'S ok. Realistic, and on the whole, well paced. I may go back and read a few more of them.

When Micajah Fenton discovers a crater in his front yard with a broken time glider in the bottom and a naked, virtual woman on his lawn, he delays his plans to kill himself. While helping repair the marooned time traveler’s glider, Cager realizes it can return him to his past to correct a mistake that had haunted him his entire life. As payment for his help, the virtual creature living in the circuitry of the marooned glider, sends Cager back in time as his ten-year-old self, knowing everything he’d known at eighty and gives him access to advanced equations of space and time. But living life over knowing the future isn’t as easy as Cager has anticipated. His every action alters the future he remembers until much of what he remembers never happened at all. And those changes work against him at every turn, preventing him correcting the most serious mistake of his life. Now he must use his advanced mathematical ability to build his own time machine to go back and try again. But he needs a fortune even to begin. Then he receives help from a strange, young woman with no history. While perfecting time travel, Cager and his new partner overcome enormous problems, even being hunted by dinosaurs in the Cretaceous. After that, though, things get really bizarre.

I'm hoping the series doesn't end in this one, the series is so intensely good :)

Fire and Fury. In English. I haven't even finished the prologue and already found a poorly constructed phrase.
(vows to get a job as a proof-reader)
