Pink Floyd - Live in Venice

30 years ago today, and with an estimated 100 million audience for the shortened, 90 minute show via the live TV broadcast. These pictures show how things changed in the lagoon the Floyd's floating stage was anchored in, between the set-up during the day, and the show itself.

Image

PS. My personal story about that night was that a truck hit an energy post, blowing up the "transformer"(?) and spoiling the show for those glued on the TV screen around my local area.

A moon landing is the arrival of a spacecraft on the surface of a planet's natural satellite, and in this case, refers specifically to landings on the lunar surface of Earth's Moon. This includes both manned and unmanned (robotic) missions. The first human-made object to reach the surface of the Moon was the Soviet Union's Luna 2 mission on September 13, 1959. The United States's Apollo 11 mission was the first manned spacecraft to land on the Moon on July 20, 1969.

50th Anniversary of the Moon Landing

50 years ago, NASA’s Apollo 11 mission changed our world and ideas of what is possible by successfully landing humans on the surface of the moon—and bringing them home safely—for the first time in history. Today’s video Doodle celebrates this moment of human achievement by taking us through the journey to the moon and back, narrated by someone with firsthand knowledge of the epic event: former astronaut and Apollo 11 command module pilot Michael Collins.

Apollo 11’s journey to the moon, annotated
The moon landing was a feat of engineering, accomplished through the careful deconstruction of a 3,000 ton spacecraft.

Apollo 11 launched on July 16, 1969, carrying Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins on a journey to pull off humankind’s first moon landing. The eight-day journey was made possible by the careful deconstruction of the Saturn V rocket and Apollo spacecraft, and made use of a technique of docking components of the spacecraft in lunar orbit so the astronauts could land on, and then launch from, the lunar surface.

50 Years Later, Beatles Fans Recreate Abbey Road Cover Shot

(LONDON) — It was 50 years ago today, that The Beatles caused a traffic delay.

And hundreds of fans of the Fab Four gathered Thursday at a crosswalk in London’s St. John’s Wood neighborhood immortalized on the “Abbey Road” album to recreate the cover photo half a century after it was taken.

At 11:35 a.m. on Aug. 8, 1969, Iain Macmillan photographed John, Paul, George and Ringo striding single-file across the black-and-white “zebra” crossing outside Abbey Road Studios while a police officer stopped traffic.

Used as the cover of the band’s penultimate studio album, it became one of the most famous images in music history.

On Thursday spectators snapped photos on cellphones and lookalikes from a Beatles cover band crossed the street in tribute to the original image.

The spot remains a place of pilgrimage for Beatles fans from around the world.

“Every hour of every day there are fans on the crossing,” said Beatles tour guide Richard Porter, who organized Thursday’s commemoration. “I’ve seen lots of different sights on the crossing, too, from couples having their wedding photos taken to people going across naked.”

Pink Floyd

The first night of what became almost 200 shows - the #pinkfloyd Momentary Lapse of Reason tour opened in Ottawa, Canada on this day in 1987. The production had three stages which leapfrogged each other to ensure things were ready in time: at any given time, one was being set up, one was being performed on, and one was being taken down and transported to the next venue on the schedule. The first nine shows of the tour started with Echoes; Shine On You Crazy Diamond took its place. Did any of you see this tour, and if so, what did you think?

One serious war protester...

On November 2, 1965, Morrison doused himself in kerosene and set himself on fire below Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara's Pentagon office.

His wife later stated:
"Human beings have to stop killing other human beings."

Fall of the Berlin Wall

"The fall of the Berlin Wall (German: Mauerfall), on 9 November 1989, was a pivotal event in world history which marked the falling of the Iron Curtain. The fall of the inner German border took place shortly afterwards. An end to the Cold War was declared at the Malta Summit three weeks later, and the reunification of Germany took place during the following year."
