So you're shipwrecked on a desert island. One with a CD player. And before your ship sinks you only have enough time to grab five Zappa CDs. What five do you take?

I'm going to start (in chronological order) and I bet take a detour that no one is expecting:

1. Freak Out
2. We're only in it for the Money
3. Thing Fish
4. Civilization Phaze III
5. Playground Psychotics

For the people wondering about number 3, it was the first Zappa album I bought of my own accord, ie I'd borrowed a few off my brother and subsequently bought them, but this I bought with no prior knowledge, in the vinyl box set. And I loved it. I only subsequently heard the original versions of many of the songs on it, so these remained mostly may favourite versions. When you're a teenager and you get something this fucking weird in your life that no one else you know has ever even heard it becomes quite special.

Chris

Well, this might be cheating but to maximize my listening options by loading up on box sets and multi-disc sets.

1) Threesome No. 1 (Freak Out, Absolutely Free, WOIIFTM)
2) Threesome No. 2 (Hot Rats, Waka/Jawaka, The Grand Wazoo)
3) Apostrophe’/Over-Nite Sensation (the Ryko version that has both on one cd)
4) Lather
5) Zappa in New York (40th Anniversary Deluxe)

Man, that was hard. I’d probably go down with the ship trying to decide.

Just picking five of the YCDTOSA series would be a tempting choice too. To many fans surprise I would leave Vol. 2 behind. I like the “mix tape” format of the other volumes and they have a great variety from all eras.

Without cheating, chronologically:

- Hot Rats
- Grand Wazoo
- Zappa In New York
- Läther
- YCDTOSA #2

3. Ship Arriving Too Damn Late
4. YCDTOSA Volume 1
5. Grand Wazoo

That's pretty much your problem. Do you really want to be reminded of it for the rest of your life?

Strangely, I didn't notice the aptness of that choice. My reason was because I really dig his frantic guitar work in "I Come From Nowhere".

Sorry. I've been listening to Frank so much my whole life. I would probably choose something else for the desert island at this point.

I'm surprised to see a couple of mentions for SATLTSADW. Never been a favourite of mine, or even close to it.

I like it but I agree that it probably wouldn’t be in most fan’s top ten lists.
