Love Of My Life, Planet Of My Dreams... ehhm... Strictly Genteel off 200 Motels always reminds me of Alice In Wonderland for some reason, especially the "microwave oven".

'Fountain of Love' comes to mind. Close your eyes it could sound like four Philly kids in the '50s standing around a burn barrel harmonizing. 8)

That song is written by George Duke. The lyrics are obviously by FZ though

Well, one can hardly imagine THE Frank Zappa sitting at a keyboard, happily tapping away the beautiful melodies on "Francesco Zappa."

I know that it's not Zappa-composed music, but that doesn't make it any easier to accept it as a FZ album. (I love it nonetheless.)

To me the one song that has always sounded the most UnZappa in the catalogue has always been Project X. I absolutely love it, but there's something about the acoustic guitar chordal progression that has always made it seem completely not Frank, even if the melody and orchestration of it is ENTIRELY Zappaian, every time the song starts, I have to do a double take and question if I'm still listening to Uncle Meat or not!

This thread, possibly more than any other, suffers from a fatal fundamental conundrum. I mean, what does sound like Zappa? What I've noticed about the majority of FZ fans is that they don't like 100% of his music and the polls certainly indicate that there is no typical FZ fan. The most common FZ fan I would guess leans more towards his rock bent than any other, and on the other end of the scale there are a small number who mainly go for his more 20th century classical stuff. So what sounds like FZ to some might really only apply to what they like about him in particular.

There is very little that FZ wrote that doesn't impress me. My least favourite pieces would be amongst his synclavier output where some of them are a little too experimental or ramble a bit and don't seem as articulated or as finely chiselled as the vast majority of his other pieces. But they all sound like FZ to me.

Sure, the satire and diversity of Zappa makes it hard to point at anything as untypical. But some people mentioned Uncle Remus and Yo' Cats, and those songs are partly written by Duke and Mars, so I guess it's not entirely impossible to say that this is something that Zappa would normally not have written.

Satirical songs with music that doesn't sound typically Zappaesque: I'm So Cute, Tinseltown Rebellion, Be in my Video, Rhymin' Man, Promiscuous. The last few are untypical of Zappa in that they're horribly unlistenable, as well :P

I guess it's easier to find typical features of Zappa's music than untypical. But I'll leave that to someone with a more theoretical understanding of music

Dio Fa isn't typically FZ & despite it making me a little sad when hearing it, its a thing of beauty.

Another interesting piece is "Nap Time", not sure whether FZ would've deemed it releasable had he lived, but its nice to have anyway.

Yeah, Nap Time is beautiful - and sad. FZ would probably have "done something" with it before releasing, or shelved it. I'm happy to have it.

I doubt that he would have released Strat Vindaloo, because the playing is so tentative, but to me that's another priceless little gem from EIHN - it's so soulful.

I sometimes think of Everything Is Healing Nicely as the Ensemble Modern Weasels Ripped My Flesh. Perhaps a ridiculous comparison, because the energy level on Weasels is so much higher. But there's something about the anarchy and unpredictability of both albums that is similar.

So even EIHN - which FZ would surely not have released in that form - is not totally untypical of him, although there are some pretty unusual moments...

"I'm so Cute" and "Jones Crusher" really took me by surprise when I first heard them, especially "I'm so Cute." Really not the sort of sound I'd come to expect from Zappa, and if I'd heard the songs on the radio I'd never have guessed they were by Frank in a million years.

I'm so cute sounds like quintessential FZ at his most stupid to me with exactly the kind of stupid riff he was so fond of.

Tears began to fall however sounds quite unlike FZ.
When I first heard that song I thought it was a cover of some 50's classic I didn't know.
