FZ: "Okay. You look lovely tonight! Okay. Wait a minute. Yeah, I know he does. Alright, as you all know, this is Halloween, the finest night of the year. And you are in the right place at the right time. Tonight's show, the first show, is being videotaped. And the second show goes out live via satellite, and will also be videotaped. And the whole thing, both shows and all the encores and everything, will be edited together to make one big thing later. So . . . So, I hope that the cameras don't cause you any inconvenience. Please cooperate with them. Don't give them any trouble. And, uh, we'll try and make the show go as smoothly as possible, in spite of the fact that it's on TV. Okay? Alright, I can't sign everything all at once, so I'll try . . . thank you - I'll try and get to it later. Okay. These are Martian flowers? Wonderful. Gail will put these over here. Here's a guy that would look good with them.

Let me introduce you to everybody. This is Ray White on guitar and vocals. Tommy Mars on keyboards. Scott Thunes on bass. Chad Wackerman on drums. Ed Mann on percussion. Bobby Martin on keyboards. And our little Italian virtuoso, Steve Vai, on guitar and et cetera. You want me to spank him? Is that the deal? Maybe later. He needs it.

Okay. We're now going to play some selections for you from our new album which has been, uh, well, let's just say that the radio stations have been kind of ignoring it a little bit. Oh! Alright. No, no, no! We gotta start this show now. You ready? 1, 2."

"Mini-MOFO" actually has quite a bit extra to offer.

7 unique tracks (total time 22:57) not found elsewhere on cd:

Who Are The Brain Police? (mono single mix) (3:26)
How Could I Be Such A Fool? (mono single mix) (2:13)
Hungry Freaks, Daddy (Basic Tracks) (3:29)
Help, I'm A Rock (1970 FZ Remix) (4:43)
It Can't Happen Here (1970 FZ Remix) (3:59)
Watts Riot Demo/Fillmore Sequence (2:07)
Freak Out Zilofone (3:00)

If anyone is still on the fence about buying this, importcds.com currently has it MUCH cheaper than anywhere else I've seen: $88.52. They probably won't have it for long. I'll still pass; I bought the download instead. No more masks for me.

I have just downloaded this for £25 from iTunes. Can't possibly justify over £100 for the mask set.

Listening to Halloween 73 just before this downloaded, and I can't help thinking that releasing a conventional single CD from a different halloween show every year may have been a much better idea. These box sets have such a limited audience, whereas a double CD from a single great show would have been much more affordable and interesting. Do I really want 7 different versions of Montana, or whatever, from the same run of shows?

Chris

As real Zappa fans are aware, Frank never played the same solo twice. I'm all for multi-concert sets.

If you don't want to listen to multiple versions, there have always been highlights discs made available. Or just download the tracks you like and make your own set.

Don't give these guys any bad ideas, remember how disappointing the Halloween 1978 DVD-A was?

That's a good price. It's $40 on iTunes in the USA, $38 on Amazon.

Just the one disc here. There is just one odd spot where Joe's Garage is cut off rather abruptly. Didn't know what to make of Torture after 2 plays. Other than I still like the Best Band version of Torture most.

Now that you mention it, there's something weird about that track on the download file: it is supposed to be 2:30 long, but the time display reaches 2:30, then goes back to 2:29, and then to 2:30 again for a fraction of a second as it segues into "Why Does It Hurt When I Pee." The music plays through without interruption. Never seen anything like that before.

I don't get any weirdness from Joe's Garage to Why Does It Hurt When I pee. My download is playing in iTunes on a Mac.

There's no audible glitch, but what happens on your time display when the track reaches 2:30? I'm also playing it on iTunes.

Of course some people will want these multi-show sets, but it feels like there's a law of diminishing returns here, but with increasing costs.

There is no manufacture error, Joe's Garage just cuts off at "song that goes like..." and goes right into Pee. I only have, for live sets, YCDTOSA 3 to compare to. Same there. Ends at 2:20.

But Even in the single Joe's Garage ends with:
I said the years was rollin' by, yeah
The years was rollin' by . . .
(I'm calling THE POLICE!)
So the years was rollin' by . . .
(I did it!)
So the years was rollin' by . . .
(They'll be here . . . shortly!)
By, by, the years was rollin' by . . .

But .... how could they let Trendmonger write the credits ? Did he donate his pocket money to the ZFT ?

Who else do you go to when you want to make sure you're going to get a fawning, over the top remembrance?

I meant no weirdness with times. Mine just gets to 2:30 and goes straight to 0:00 on the next track. Which OS are you using?

I just think of it as like that track where FZ gets that poet on the stage, one of the over the top fans in the front row, who goes on about a garden where trees won't grow and then Ike Willis says "Kindergarden?" The worst part I find about Trendmonger on this forum is how judgemental he can be and that's completely absent. Thankfully, it's probably the most coherent thing I've ever read by him.

I have an old Mac, so I'm stuck on El Capitan (10.11.6). But I just don't get how the time counter can go backwards for a second while the music continues normally.
