I now know after almost a lifetime of contemplating the whole catalogue of official Frank released records and what my absolute scaled down, focused, desert Isle distilled grouping would be:
hands down, here they are:
Uncle Meat
Hot Rats
Burnt Weenie Sandwich
Weasels Ripped My Flesh
Chunga’s Revenge

That’s It.

For a long time, I used to declare Chunga’s Revenge as my favorite Zappa record. I am in love with the album cover and inside artwork.

There is much I love about other records, for sure.

Probably my all time favorite Zappa Instrumental is Holiday In Berlin Full Blown.
Would anyone else choose this 5 album stretch of golden nuggets as their favorite Zappa era.

It’s so much more about the music than the actual musicians for me.
But that’s not to take anything away from the value of individual musicians who have played with FZ throughout the years.

Kurt

God that's a great set there. Mine would be pretty close, maybe switching one out for another title.

Sheik Yerbouti was my first Zappa lp. After 40 years of taking it all in and owning all but maybe 4 releases, I have to go with:
Freak Out
Absolutely Free
Were Only in it …. Money
Uncle Meat
200 Motels

That's a great run of albums. I can't seek to improve on that, but any 5-album run can only cover 2/3 'eras' at most, so it's quite limiting!

I got totally into FZ during the Joe's Garage era, and got into Sheik Yerbouti and all of that at the time...but when I really dig into it, I'm a HUGE "Roxy and Elsewhere" band fan!

I would say every era has it's own great points, I don't think I could choose just one.

Probably the Eygyptian New Kingdom. You had Ramses, Amenhotep, Akenhaton, and Tut.
