It has finally popped up on Amazon.ca.
If I order it, it will cost me, including tax/shipping, $141.59 CDN
However, I already have it ordered at Amazon.com, total; cost = $103.84
I like to buy Canadian, but, Jeeeez, at least be close.

This release really pisses me off. £60 for four CDs I can just about cope with, although it's annoying. But a great big box and a mask? Seriously, why? It's a waste of space and packaging. I was annoyed enough at the LINY 40th set because it was so expensive and unnecessarily big. And as a marketing ploy it seems unlikely to lead to more sales, but hugely likely to lead to less.

I've got everything Zappa has released on CD. Avoided the Halloween 77 set because it was a USB stick, and I'm not interested in the downloads. But please, give me something that fits on my shelf.

^Same here. I'm happy to get more content, but not in overpriced sets that I don't have any use for, other than putting away in a closet. If these last few releases make decent revenue for the ZFT, that's cool. But I'd rather have more compact releases on the side, so I could purchase those.

Which has the worst "penalty packaging" - this Halloween '73 set, or the new Tool CD? Absolutely ridiculous w/ Tool. $45 for the new single CD. BUT it comes in a fancy box with a lyric/pic book & a rechargeable 4" TV screen/monitor to watch videos, w/ a USB hookup. That's a big FU to their fans who still buy CDs. I bought the last 2 Tool CDs week of release. I'll skip this and wait for someone to burn me a copy unless they release a standard CD or reasonably priced LP soon.

If you have ever watched Shark Tank you will know that your manufacturing run size determines cost and price...therefore Tool a very popular band in the 90's and 2000's (actually to this day) will have a large enough production run to decrease cost and as a result price, not so sure the ZFT has that luxury...if we do not buy at these somewhat higher prices the releases may dry up (personally I think the packaging is cool)...

Well I would have placed an order right here on the Zappa.com website as I would have loved to have pre-heard the new previously unreleased live version of 'The Idiot Bastard Son' but alas the Zappa website charges just over 6 times what Amazon is offering me for postage across the pond to Australia. So that was an instant no go.

Being a mad keen Zappa fan, I've now pre-ordered from Amazon and look forward to listening to this great new concert.

Out of curiosity and this question is aimed solely at the powers that be right here at Zappa.com.

WHY IF YOU ALREADY HAVE 24bit 96KHz audio files of these precious concerts will you not make them available as a free download to box set purchasers?????????

Of all the nerve, purchasers are offered 'MP3's' only??? This is like waving the candy in front of the baby and only offering them a piece of carrot instead. In terms of a Halloween boxset well this deserves a trick in the form of eggs thrown at the releasers faces at high velocity.

Why not offer the digital download option in hi-definition??? You can probably even charge more for it. Why not include the CD's AND a USB stick with these very files for that matter. Why brag about the audio quality only to offer only downgraded compressed audio files on CD's and as MP3's??? I mean seriously not even FLAC files.

This fan is cheesed off about these crazy ideas. It's fast approaching 2020 for crying out loud. Even solo small artists are offering high quality files from sites like Band camp, yet the music of the great Frank Zappa get's supplied as lower quality 16bit 44.1KHz down sampled CD's or even worse MP3's only?????? WHY??? WHY???? WHY????

Afraid it inspired this parody from this fan of a great Zappa classic. (You know which song this is!!!!!)

It was the blackest night
There was no moon in site
You know the audio wasn't shining
Cause the files were low bite
I heard the low fi fuzz
Even speaker buzz
Was that a werewolf honking
Or some digital crud.

I'm not mean but I'm mad
You know I aint no audio sissy
Got a cool hi-fi setup
By the name of Mogami
Talking about this
Well I certainly have a beef
N this audio journey will threaten my sanity

I noticed even the MP3's
were just a little weird
N so I figured it might sound better
with a little beer
I said turn it up I really want some
But there was no reply and I just felt dumb.

Where's that high definition I like so well, n my god damn decent files
Is what I started to yell, then I heard a noise
like a crunching twig n out popped my CD
He's about coaster big.

The other CD's where in packaging
Plus a mask at the peak
Then some silicon gloves
With a marketing reek
Yes it was commercial alright
I swear I know it was
It had some low quality offerings
Stuck inside all the stores
You know it looked to me
Like it was a lazy release
I said 'You sons of bitches'
Cause I was cheesed with them
But Zappa.com as usual will probably just ignore
If I shoot you with some love
Would you settle the score?

Alright, alright I'll cut it there. Just wishing away as usual.

SIGH!!!!

Am I the only one getting a tad bored of the 73/74 era?

@NuclearProstate No you are not.

The R&E album has always been a favourite and back in the day, discovering things from bootlegs that various lineups of that era were playing, such as Dupree’s Paradise, that weren’t being released and could only be heard in such poor quality, led to them being a holy grail for a long time. These releases were hugely exciting, but you can have too much of a good thing.

And now for something completely different ...

I do realise of course that there have been quite a wide range of releases over the years since 1993.

^^More ‘80’s stuff please. I feel like the ‘80’s has been relatively underrepresented and there has to be oodles of high quality recordings to choose from.

I'd be happy with anything from '80s w/ band - any pre-tour rehearsals, full shows from '80-'82, & '88 mainly. Don't need anything from '84 unless it's an outrageously funny show with lots of secret word play, or one of those early '84 shows w/ NMB if there's one worthy of a two disc set.

agree completely - I waited and finally pulled the trigger on amazon.ca when the price came down a bit - to $109. Sure I'd rather not have a bulky box but multiple shows of any run? Yes please. I thought the sound of Halloween '77 was stellar and love the Roxy box, I'm looking forward to this Halloween run.

Wasn't some Garrick stuff supposed to be released at one time?

Much as I would prefer to support the ZFT by purchasing directly through Zappa.com
(Hi Fi 24/7) unfortunately for me the cost of doing so is prohibitive.

Looking forward to it. CDs instead of USB. It would have been kind of cool to have another piece of Halloween candy like the Punky bar.

I weakened and bought the box set from amazon.co.uk for £59.83, the equivalent of about AUD110, which is better than the AUD155 I first saw a while ago on amazon.com, which has now come down to AUD130. I'm getting it delivered free to family in the UK because Amazon UK won't send physical product to Australia.

For the second time in 40+ years of buying zappa's music, i'll pass on Chicago Halloween box. If the CD became available at a store near me (as OF has), then yeah i'll spend the bucks. Don't need another "Collector's item thingy".

Give us a shitload of unheard, wart's an all, guitar solo's ! please.

No, I'm losing interest in it as well.

The reality is that multiple versions of the same songs, often on the same CD set, is a challenge for most fans. Roxy and Elsewhere is a classic. I loved YCDTOSA Vol 2. Each successive 73/74 release has been less interesting. I'm just buying them for completeness now.

I'd like new releases to be limited to things that are actually unique / different. Not just another gig from a year where we already have seven or eight.

Count me in as someone else who is not overly excited about this release. The "73 band has been over saturated.
Not that I dislike this band, but I want to hear some rarer stuff. I'll probably wind up getting this, but there's no
hurry.

I'm starting to feel a bit pathetic having bought the box. For those who aren't interested in it, the downloads are available relatively cheaply from iTunes. And please - no lectures about file resolutions - I have a degree in theoretical physics and am well versed in the relationship between sampling and frequency range and so on and am well able to make an informed decision. Downloads from iTunes sound more than fine to my real human, non bionic, ears.
