I'm looking to pick up some of the remaining CDs I have never got around to buying, but I've ruled the following out. Does anyone have any comments or reasons why I may want to consider buying these?

Mothermania (compilation)
Have I Offended Someone (compilation)
Quaudiophiliac (I don't have a surround sound DVD system)
MOFO 2cd set (rip off, having bought the 4 cd set)
Congress Shall Make No Law (spoken word)
Understanding America (Compilation)
Baby Snakes (Compleat Soundtrack) (I don't download)
200 Motels, The Suites (little to do with Zappa?)
Zappetite (compilation)
Beat the Boots II (too expensive)
Beat the Boots III (download again)

Many thanks

Chris

Mothermania - The compilation was notable for featuring unique mixes or edits of the songs compiled for its release, including an uncensored version of "Mother People", which previously appeared on We're Only in It for the Money in a censored version, and a radically different mix of "The Idiot Bastard Son".

MOFO 2cd set - contains eight cuts, not on the 4 disc.

I still don't have Quaudiophiliac, but it has to be essential...

Welcome to the forum, Proons.

Quaudiophiliac (I don't have a surround sound DVD system)

You don't need surround sound to enjoy the album; you can play it in regular stereo. Musically kind of a mish-mosh, but in that it's hardly unique in the Zappa canon.

200 Motels, The Suites (little to do with Zappa?)

Obviously no Zappa involvement with the performance or production, but it's still his music! Sure, you've heard most of the compositions before, but not in this context, and a substantial amount of the material is unreleased. I think this is a respectful and successful attempt at recreating a never fully realized large-scale piece of the project-object. Sonically much better than the original 200 Motels, although I'd still take the original any day of the week.

If you have all but those, might as well just get them too. Zappatite seems unnecessary but everything else has unique content to that release.

If I heard correctly through the rumor mill, the run of shows that comprised Baby Snakes (Halloween '77) might be released as a complete run in a box set. Hopefully that actually happens. Otherwise the DVD audio could be ripped instead of buying the download.

I'm not sure why this has been elevated to an official release. What I meant was that it seems to have no more connection to Zappa than, say, ZPZ or the Zappa's Universe concert...

True, except that those didn't add any "new" compositions to the FZ canon like The Suites does.

Thanks for the replies - some food for thought. MOFO two disc looks the most interesting, but it offends me that they felt the need to rip off the fans in this way.

The way they explained it was exactly the opposite. Realizing that not everybody could readily afford the massive and beautiful 4-disc set the zft opted to also release the 2 disc version that more could afford and included unique tracks to that release so that even the poorer consumers could 'get a taste' and have something uniquely collected. The extra tracks are pretty special (imho) and this 2disc version might also be an easier way to introduce to newer customers that might otherwise balk at a big boxset to get their feet wet without being obligated to make the total plunge. The problem with this idea was that the 2disc version was pricey even by zft norms.

The Beat the Boots sets are otherwise available, mostly in more original contexts (and for free in the last decade). Seeing how wide-ranging Frank's music and the touring bands etc. were, however, those shows that the Beat the Boot sets are drawn from, remain pretty well representative and/or standout recordings of many of the various ensembles (even if they didn't sound so great production-wise on the BTB releases). So the dates on those BTB sets are worth seeking out for oft-times rapturous listening enjoyment. "Get the big pieces!"

Quaudiophiliac is a unique document collecting unique mixes that simply can't sound better elsewhere. "Chunga's Basement" is a unique item that should go into any Zappa fan's ears as often as possible. Wild Love and Waka-Jawaka must be heard in their surround sound splendour at least once. Heck, throw a block party, have your local theater put it on, sell beer and make a party out of it. It's a way of life.

The Deluxe version of Porn Wars on Understanding America is also pretty essential.

Congress Shall Make No Law should go to the Library of Congress and City Hall's across America Herself. But is it really necessary on most people's shelves? Meh. IMHO.

Whateverybodyelse said here is just as relevant also.
