Nice!!

In October 2013, the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, under the baton of conductor Essa-Pekka Salonen, recorded the music of composer Frank Zappa which he had originally scored for his cult-classic movie “200 Motels.” This limited-edition, purple-colored 7” single contains the opening piece from the concert, “Overture” (from 200 Motels) and another gem from the Zappa canon on the B-side; the previously unreleased recording of “What’s the Name of Your Group?” from the original score performed in 1971 by Zappa with the Royal Philharmonic.

I'm not ready. I was gonna go to the regular shop 10 minutes from home, but my wife has been hinting that she'd like to go to Chicago this weekend and that I should pick a store there instead. Double-edged sword in that there are stores with more RSD products, more swag and bands playing, but longer lines and farther away so I'd get there later and maybe not get the FZ 45, of Montreal's Snare Lustrous Doomings or my wife's pick - the Foo Fighters Laundry Tapes. What to do...

my main guy hadn't opened all his boxes of vinyl, however, there's another record store grand opening on rsd directly across the street, a video rental shop recently split into video/music shop; that guy said he has 'more than one' copy of the zappa single; neither had seen foo fighters or sld, but they were still unpacking, will check back friday eve

both stores open 8 am

Noticed this earlier today. Held back from commenting because I wanted to let the board members who frequent here a bit more regularly have their first piece of commentary on the video. Having previously noticed where Jayp was asking about "source" the concept of source has truly come full circle.

In looking at the video we can see the reel tape was created April 8, 1977. Upon first watching the video I was wondering if FZ could have made a safety of some of the 200 Motels Material. What I took away more-so the first eyes and ears go through was that the audio sounds fantastic, but in looking to the skies somethign was revealed, I missed what should have been obvious, I then came back and watched it again.

Upon further analysis I see that this is a build reel that FZ produced. Speed 15IPS, Tape ?07, Level +3, Tittle's of What’s The Name Of Your Group?, Easy Meat, Breakfast Report, 200 Motels Script Rehearsal Trim, and possibly some other tracks. The comments area on the reel box is really tough to see, but I can now see that one side of this 7" vinyl has been pressed from a 1977 build reel. One can get a general view of 4 of the tittles on this build reel.

Edit: I bet whatever the name of all the tracks in FZs build reel is, that this build reel is really far out and groovy. From what I can see in the video I also noticed another orchestral trim after the 4th listing. When I first saw the video I was initially puzzled of safeties of 200 Motels material, not that there is anything wrong with making a safety at any period of time, but I can now breath a sigh of relief, we can see this is clearly a build reel. Some project FZ was working on. I did give the video another look at today and I noticed some more information to raise hardcore awareness. You can get a larger surface area look of the box at the 1:53 mark. I believe I am seeing no less than 8 tracks. Normally I do not get too detailed about speculation on unreleased build reels, but in this case this is a build reel that the ZFT are officially sharing with us. Even if it is only the one track that makes it's way to an official release, thank goodness for this new 7" vinyl playing a part of keeping record stores alive. For the ZFT to take the time and financial resources, it shows not only a commitment to have Franks works live on vinyl but help the few record stores that are left treading water. Thinking of of one if not FZs favorite record store, Bleeker Bobs in NYC, closed in 2013. ..... In the manner in which the Vaultmeister navigates the studio, it's a dance. While I don't think Martha Graham's company every got down this way the video is glorious to a Zappa fan's heart .

Could it be that the entire contents of this build reel, and whatever else Frank was putting together for whatever project, will be included in a forthcomming release? Hmmmm.

Well, I would not bother, it should be available on eBay or on discogs very soon.

FFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU.....
My second copy has tiny litlle scratches on the beginning of side 2.
The needle stays in the groove, but I can hear annoying clicks during the first seconds.
This is due to a grain of sand that was stuck in the plastic sleeve.
What's wrong between Pallas, Germany and the store in Paris where I got it?
Will try to exchange it ... Pffffffffffffffffffff

My local store didn't have it, I got there late in the day, so I'm not sure if they had it to begin with. I don't know if I would have bought it anyway. What's it going for?
Maybe I'm alone on this, but even as a somewhat completist, I don't really need a vinyl single of an orchestral piece that got left off of 200 Motels. I'd rather it be included with whatever else was left off the album on a deluxe multi-disc reissue. As for the "new" live track/b-side that was recently recorded live, I'd rather buy that in a somewhat complete form too, not have it piece-mealed.

My RSD '15 scores:
OFF! - Live From The BBC 10"
The Stooges - Live At Ungano's '70
Mclusky-ism
