Has anybody noticed that there is no real savings when buying a disc's worth of music from ZFT's download site? I'd probably buy the Mothermania as a high-res. FLAC collection if it reflected at least a token discount over typical (and over-priced) retail CD's. Considering that packaging and shipping don't enter into the picture, it would be great if the ZFT reflected that savings in the price of the recording.

Mothermania is not on my short list, but I'm sure that other catalog releases will soon make their way to the SFT site. Note that they are missing from Ryko's web page.

This is not entirely true, you are saving carbon dioxide.

Does it ever bother anyone else that recording companies have a way to distribute music with almost no overhead? Before downloads if someone wanted to sell music they had to record it, put it on a medium to sell, and find a place to sell it. All of these things are much cheaper than they were even 20 years ago. No matter what, a record, CD, cassette, or whatever media output medium, had to be bought to contain said recordings. This created some restriction in the production of an album, in that there could only be so many produced as any physical material is not infinite; and no matter what, it still cost SOMETHING. It then had to be put up for sale somewhere, either store front or magazine.

Flash forward to today's digital music, once a recording is made (which is much cheaper now than ever) and put into digital file format it is a finished product ready for sale, more or less. The cost of maintaining a web page where this digital music can be located is nothing compared to having a brick and mortar store sell your product. What is to stop a company that produced said digital file from selling infinite copies and making endless amounts of money with no further cost (and probably no more artist compensation). This has never felt right to me.

I remember FZ talking about how people didn't care about the packaging for music and just wanted the music itself. While I do think this is true, there is something to be said for having something tangible you can hold in your hand. I have a good amount of downloaded music that I have paid hard earned money for, and I honestly can't place it on the same value level as the recordings that sit on my shelf. Perhaps my thinking is antiquated.

I really wish that the Zappa site would just sell .flac downloads of everything new, rather than just sell the "cd" package with the extra stuff! I'd love to have the Halloween 1973 package, but I don't need the tchatchkies!

Same with the Hot Rats set.... Oh well....
