First, I bought Roxy when it came out, and LPs are warmer.

Although Helsinki is a full concert, I got so used to some of the tunes in their Roxy configurations that Helsinki's versions didn't make it for me.

Most of Frank's '70s and early '80s concert recordings were so-oo-oo laden with overdubs that I got used to the polished sound, and the rawer sound of Helsinki was inferior.

Lastly the recording, that may have been the best that FZ could have done with the tapes, but the drums are BAD BAD BAD sounding.

If Roxy had Jean Luc on it it would have been my favorite FZ album, which still is a tie between Uncle Meat and Waka Jwaka

Me too! The Inca Roads sound is soo perfect!
The roxy was not used on One size fits all it was kctv show

The Solo on Inca Roads is from the Helsinki concert... minus the freeze dried bass drum!
The drums on the solo part do sound out of place why the solo sounds better must be down to the album,s studio was KCET tv where the rest of the track comes from.heard zappa say in interview that the tv sudios was much better sound than average places.

The kick drum sound on YCDTOSA vol. 2 is unbelievably shit. Almost ruins a great album.

why would we blame chad? it was frank's decision to put it in there instead of chester's.

There's no Wackerman overdub on this release. It's a rumor and it's false.

You shut up. Were you there when the album was mixed? No. Bob Stone was the engineer on the album. He knows more than you about this subject. Stop acting like a bitch.

you're wrong (as usual). frank zappa replaced chester thompson's kick drum with samples of chad's kick drum. it's true, and it's obvious if you listen.

What evidence do you have? We have the word of someone who actually worked on the album, versus the word of somebody who doesn't want to admit that he's wrong. I could say that I personally don't hear it, but my opinion on this matter doesn't matter when you have someone who actually mixed the album saying that the rumor's false. Quit acting like a bitch and face facts. (You still want to know if I hear it? I don't. You know why? Because it's not there.)

you stupid little twerp.
did bob stone work with frank zappa during 1993 when zappa remastered and made his final approved masters for the ryko 95 releases? no, he didn't!

again; listen to chester thompson's kick drum on other zappa albums he played on, and compare it to the kick drum heard on the helsinki concert.

You can't counter "fact" with "yelling and whatever I say goes even if I have no evidence to back it up". That's the Ann Coulter/monkey part of the brain at work.

Maybe Bob Stone just denies the rumor?

Why do you think it's called a "rumor"?

I could start a rumor that one of Zappa's daughters dated Carrot Top, but I'd have absolutely no proof to back it up. Actually, I'm really sorry for even motioning the idea...I don't even know if Carrot Top is human...

Fine. I'm waiting for a sensible explanation how come the kick drum on YCDTOSA2 sounds so different from other 1974 band recordings (a la "Smell My Beard"), to the point of sounding sterile and, well, a bit 80s if you will.

I'm fairly sure there's a Wackerman kick sound triggered on CD version of "Mr Green Genes" too. It just sounds like that. What? You actually think that instead FZ invented the time machine and brought some state-of-the-art drum mikes to the Apostolic Studio?

Is the remastered version different from the first release ? I've got the first Zappa Records edition from 1988 and I never noticed a 84 kick drum sound.

88? 84? I'm talking '93.

I asked if the 88 version is different from later editions.

Quote:
1995 CDs

Official Ryko statement on volumes 1-4: "New master; New timing sheet: Volumes 1-4" [full statement]. John Henley's statement:

I have replaced Stages 1, 2 and 4 with the newer issues, and I think they sound better, especially 2. There are no ... differences to the mix, I just think the newer masters sound a little more lifelike, a little less attenuated on the high end.

Some dissent from David G:

The only duplicate I have is volume II, and (apologies to John Henley) I am disappointed to report that the old Ryko and new Ryko of stage II are absolutely digitally identical.

http://lukpac.org/~handmade/patio/vinylvscds/stage.html#1995cds

There are no Wackerman overdubs on YCDTOS Vol. 2.
