As it is crammed with overdubs I tend to think of Roxy as the studio album and Helsinki as the live one. Both are essential and different enough to warrant owning. We're talking top shelf Zappa here.

I'll agree totally here.... but Village of the Sun still reigns supreme as an
one of my favs on Roxy..

The sound quality on Roxy wins hands down though.

maybe because what it says with the vol 2"the repertoire is basically the same as the roxy album"
in the roxy cover it says none of the road material is overdubbed
the bands are the same except 6 extra musicians on Roxy.

By the "road material" he meant the "elsewhere" tracks recorded in Chicago and Edinboro (Son Of Orange County, More Trouble Every Day and parts of Penguin In Bondage).

Penguin edits between Roxy and Chicago. (The song isn't on the circulating tape from Edinboro, so they probably didn't play it there.)

Intro - Roxy
First Verse - Chicago
Second Verse - Roxy
Second Verse from "when the battery fail" on - Chicago
Guitar Solo - Roxy (probably)
Post-Solo Verses - Chicago

currently on Village...this is truly great stuff...

shall i choose dinner or continue listening to this album?? this is so badass its a hard decision to make! 8)

Roxy is in the top 10...but it has one flaw...the fade outs.

Don't You Ever Wash That Thing is my second favorite Zappa title ever.
This version smokes - as does the Be Bop Tango, Trouble Every Day, Pygmy Twilight - love it all - except the fades...

YCDTOSA vol 2 follows just behind Roxy in the list of favs...my only complaint is Waka Jawaka is so short - should have been a monster but it is a dwarft is terms of length.

WHEN the ZPT finally releases the Roxy DVD and it's sister - the expanded CD BOX (this is a dream) then Roxy will win out.

The ending of this set, with the incomplete Montana followed by the closing theme of Big Swifty, is a mystery.

Three theories:

a) FZ didn't include the missing sections due to problems with the tapes.
b) FZ didn't like the performances of the missing sections.
c) This is how they performed the pieces that night.

Not sure which is correct.

Definitely Roxy. The songs are done perfectly... RDNZL, Wash That Thing, Pygmmy Twylight... they sound like perfected definitve versions and in the latter those songs sound like they had to make compromises because they couldn't keep up or fully convey the material. It seems plain, maybe I'm missing something.

I'm getting YCDTOS Vol. 2 for Christmas, and if it's anywhere near as good as Roxy and Elsewhere I'll be a happy bunny.

I'm going for Zappa overload this Christmas. No one knows what to get me, so I've just given them a huge list of Zappa albums! If I'm lucky I'll be getting about a dozen...

Hmm, I love em both, but every time I listen to Helsinki, that darn kick drum gets louder and louder... Listening to Stinkfoot as I write and it's actually getting quite irritating!!!

Less obtrusive when Frankie gets his chops out though!
More chops please!!!

GN

** OK, it's getting better as I go on... Kick is much less obvious.
Loving the version of RDNZL
"We could share a love...." :-D

God I love this album.. it's been too long!

The Solo on Inca Roads is from the Helsinki concert... minus the freeze dried bass drum!
