I had a math teacher in high school around '74, who was also a jazz bass player, and he told he heard The Mothers of Invention in London once, where they played some weird music in the first half, that made a lot of the audience leave. He took it as if that was the purpose of it, so that only the real fans would be left for the second half, "where they played some beautiful music".
So many years later, when I heard Ahead Of Their Time, it struck me that this had to be the concert he attended. I think the music of the first half is great, and the playing is not bad at all, compared to 200 Motels for instance. The whole play concept is weak, as admitted by FZ in the liner notes, but I like to hear this concert as a whole.
